Alexis Hunter's work has evolved considerably over the years and different media has been used to pursue ideas on society and the role of women.

The artist has been invited to have solo shows annually since the photographic Sequences were exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London.
In 1989 the Auckland City Gallery mounted the artist's Retrospective Fears/Dreams/Desires and her work has figured in many significant group exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, and others not in London. Since 2006 her narrative photographic sequences have been introduced to a new generation of feminists and have been shown in the Norwich Gallery, WACK! Art and the Feminist revolution in the United States and in the Cologne Art Fair in Germany.

'We Are Unsuitable For Framing' at The National Gallery of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

- will include the artists Alexis Hunter, Judy Darragh, Margaret Dawson, Jacqueline Fraser, Christine Hellyar, Christine Webster , Hye Rim Lee, Vivian Lynn, Lauren Lysaght, Julia Morison, Anne Noble, Fiona Pardington, Lisa Reihana, Caroline Rothwell and Barbara Kruger.

The exhibition presents a group of works that address aspect of how we perform and represent ourselves. The works explore aspect of identity, the feminine, the masculine, sexuality and mythology.
