BUNKIER SZTUKI, Kraków

Alexis Hunter is one of the most important representatives of the engaged feminist art. She contributed to creating a movement in art which imposed female artistic point of reference through image and the way of presentation. Her works are deeply rooted in political context. They form a critical analysis of masculinized culture.

The exhibition at Bunkier Sztuki is a retrospective which includes Hunter’s works from the 1970s. There will be shown pictures from the Sexual Rapport Series, Tattoo series and Object series which, referring to the status of maleness in patriarchal society, show woman’s point of view. There will also be shown the cycle entitled The Model’s Revenge which is concerned with female sexuality. Another presented work is a multipartite series called Approach to Fear. These pictures refer to the problem of oppression which women try to oppose. They are about pain, violence and identification with the aggressor, about demystification of taboo, destroying proofs of crime, or masculinization of society.

Alexis Hunter’s works are still relevant. They show us that laws and privileges that women fought for in the 60s and 70s are now in the centre of attention and are widely discussed.

Alexis Hunter was born in New Zealand. She lives in Great Britain. She is a founding member of Women’s Art Movement in London and the author of numerous essays on psychology of creative process. She took part in a lot of individual exhibitions, e.g. Approaches to Fear, ICA (London), Mythic Landscapes and Memory Series, Totah Gallery (New York) and over 150 group exhibitions, e.g.: Vision in Disbelief at the IV Sidney Biennial; State of the Art at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London; Live in Your Head: Concept and Experiment in Britain at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Until the 17th of July her work entitled The Object Series can be seen at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles at the exhibition called WACK! Art and the feminist revolution, which is being show together with the works of such famous artists as Mary Kelly, Judy Chicago, Mimi Schapiro, Eva Hesse and Nancy Spero.
